About This Quote

Hayden McGregor glanced with contempt at the pitch-black road. “I do not fear the darkness. It fears me.” He dismissed the approaching gloom with a narrowed stare. His steel gray eyes holding it back with a contemptuous regard. He looked down at his hands resting on the steering wheel, his mind focusing on the upcoming darkness, struggling to find it stifling grasp empty of its usual effects. The night had finally come and he felt no fear.

He was proud of his decision to travel over the hills in the dark, sometimes hidden from view by thick woods or sudden twisting bends in the road. He had traveled for hours, his tires gaining speed as they gained altitude, finding the footing more sure each time he came around a bend in the road. The silence had been broken only once when he had almost ran off the road, losing traction on an icy patch that had taken him by surprise.

He had made it back onto the road just in time before losing control completely and crashing into a tree that had been growing there for years. The decision to climb into this night had been easy; it meant traveling through another town early in the morning when most people were asleep and traffic would be light. He placed his hands back on the steering wheel and gazed out at the dark country road ahead of him, feeling proud of himself for taking such an action without any reservation or hesitation. "I do not fear the darkness," he thought to himself, his thoughts slowing down to that of an easy smile that stretched across his face like a mask with its wearer's true intentions concealed behind it."It fears me."
